Abductions of Dapchi girls, others expose long-standing evil against women in our society – Aisha Buhari
Mrs. Aisha Buhari, wife of the President, has hinted that the abductions of Dapchi schoolgirls and other similar cases of kidnap of girls across the country have exposed the long-standing evil perpetrated against women in the society.
She made this known in Abuja on Thursday while speaking on the topic: “Leave Our Daughters Alone’’, in commemoration of the 2018 International Women’s Day, which was organised by the National Centre for Women Development in collaboration with the wife of the President.
The President’s wife revealed that she shares in the sorrow and agony of parents of abducted girls. She, therefore, called on relevant stakeholders, especially the media, to stand against the “disturbing issue”.
She said, “As a mother, I share (in) the sorrow and agony which the parents are going through up to this moment.
“I am aware of the efforts being made for the release of the remaining Chibok girls as well as the recently (abducted) Dapchi girls. It is my sincere hope that the efforts will yield positive results.”
“This is a disturbing issue for which we must put heads together, pray, speak out, show concern and ensure that the situation comes to an end.
“ I congratulate Nigerian Women on the occasion of International Women's Day. For us in Nigeria, this year celebration comes with a difference.
"We have to reflect the sad incidences of the abduction of our daughters, especially the recent one in Dapchi, Yobe State. This for us should take center stage.
"That is why we decided to develop a local theme: #LeaveOurDaughtersAlone as a strong call for the end of this national disaster and hope for their release.
According to her, it was unfortunate that celebration of the 2018 International Women'`s day coincided with the period when the abduction of the Dapchi School girls occurred.
“The continuous use of young girls by insurgents to carry out suicide bombing, is a great source of concern to me," the First Lady said.
She noted that the Women’s day celebration presents greater opportunities for the Nigerian woman to explore bigger dreams
She also solicited equal opportunities in governance for Nigerian women to match their male counterparts.
