The Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu has disclosed that the Ministry has appropriated over N600 million in the 2018 budget for the execution of capital projects at the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS).
He stated this during the commissioning of the national headquarters of the board in Kaduna on Wednesday.
According to him, besides the budgetary allocation, the government has also committed N200 million to rehabilitation of the board's buildings ceded to it by the government.
He added that efforts are in top gear to capture staff of the board into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), which will cost the government over N2 billion annually.
NBAIS is the regulatory and examination body for Arabic and Islamic institutions including secondary schools and centres in the country.
The Board, established 1960 as Arabic and Islamic Studies Unit under the defunct Northern Nigeria Ministry of Education, became a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Education in 2017.
In 2011, the board became a national examination board like WAEC and NECO with a mandate to go on advocacy to other states and also to review curriculum to include science subjects and arts.
