A group known as Ghana First Patriotic Front (GFPF) is set to stage a massive demonstration in Accra on Wednesday March 28, 2018, kicking against the establishment of a military base for the United States armed forces in Ghana.
The military base is a facility directly owned and operated by the US military as one of its branches that shelters military equipment and personnel, and facilitates training and operations.
After details of the agreement which received cabinet approval on 8th March, 2018, were made public, there has been justifiable outrage and unified loud calls by many concerned Ghanaians for the Government of Ghana to withdraw the said agreement from Parliament.
The GFPF had earlier expressed disappointment in the decision of President Akufo-Addo led government to permit the establishment of the Military base, saying that the agreement undermines the sovereignty and security of Ghana.
It stated that it was not deterred by the arrest of the deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by the government.
According statement signed by its spokesman, the group claimed that the Akufo-Addo government’s haste in laying the agreement before parliament and the Defense Minister’s emergency press conference only portrays a blatant disregard for the germane concerns being raised by the people of Ghana.
The group observed that the President Akufo-Addo should have aborted his efforts to railroad the agreement through Parliament instead of continuously abusing Parliamentary majority by seeking to ratify this insulting agreement tomorrow before Parliament goes on break.
It stated that there was no clarity in the agreement on the benefits to the people of Ghana.
The Group said, “In any case, how much money in the world will we sell our sovereignty for?
“The entire agreement was drafted in secrecy and the government is concealing very important details from stakeholders especially as this is an agreement without a termination point.
“As a mass group of patriotic Ghanaians who cherish the sovereignty of our nation and is at the same time deeply worried about our collective security and pride.
"We have held successful talks with the Ghana Police Service in line with the Public Order Act and have reached an agreement to embark on a massive demonstration in Accra on Wednesday March 28, 2018.
The Ghana Police Service has indicated its readiness to provide security for the protesters.
The group further said, “We however hesitate to add that it is our hope that the needless excesses and brutalities meted out to harmless and helpless civilians will not be repeated at our march.
“ Our resolve has been strengthened and we are further motivated to defend the sovereignty of our beloved country regardless of what it will cost us.
“We appeal to all Ghanaians to come wearing black or red with Ghana colours as we convey our unambiguous message which is to mourn President Akufo-Addo’s betrayal of our trust and his unfortunate determination to mortgage our sovereignty, dignity and stability for a pittance," the group stated.
The group however cautioned that if President Donald Trump keeps pursuing his America First agenda, it was time for President Akufo-Addo to also put Ghana First.
