National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised alarm over the 35 containers of tramadol recently seized in various ports by the Nigeria Customs Service ( NCS). Prof. Moji Adeyeye, NAFDAC Director General, revealed that the Custom handed only nine out of 35 containers over to her agency.

Adeyeye while speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, disclosed that nine out of the seized containers of tramadol released to NAFDAC by the Custom Service had been destroyed by her agency.
She said, “We are seriously working with the custom on this and each time they seize any container, they usually invite us to come and see the containers with tramadol.
“So far, 35 containers were seized and only nine of them have been handed over to NAFDAC which we have destroyed,” she said.
She, however, decried the delay by the custom in handing over the rest of the containers to her agency.
The NAFDAC boss decried the delay by the NCS in handing over the rest of the containers to her agency. She further added that tramadol was a restricted drug but had been abused by Nigerian youths who use it without prescription.
The drug according to her, destroys children’s brain thereby threatening the future generation of the nation.
She however reaffirmed her agency's commitment to address the menace of illicit and fake drugs in the country.
The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Col Hameed Alli, has not responded to the issue raised by NAFDAC, as at the time of filing this report.
Recall that in March the Customs CG revealed that his men intercepted 5056 cartons of absolute prohibited Tramadol drugs in Apapa road in Lagos, Sango-Ota axis of Ogun State and Lagos-Ibadan express road worth N242, 688.000.00 in Duty Paid Value (DPV). This is even as the Customs CG explained that the drugs came in from India and other Asian countries.
