Healing on June 12, as Abiola family, President Buhari tender APOLOGIES

The nationwide inaugural commemoration of June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, took a unique dimension in Abuja on Tuesday, as the investiture ceremony for Late MKO Abiola, Amb.Babagana Kingibe, Late Gani Fawehinmi, turned out to be an occasion to heal frayed nerves, this was just as Abiola family members and President Muhammadu Buhari tendered apologies to repair hurt feelings.

In her remark after the  conferment of posthumous national honour on her father, Late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, winner of the June 12 Presidential election, by President Muhammadu Buhari, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, on behalf of Abiola’s family urged President Buhari to forgive and forget the roles, Late MKO Abiola played in providing the money that funded Babangida's coup which ousted him from office in 1985.

Hafsat said, "If someone told us in our family that you President Muhammadu Buhari will be the one to do this honor to MKO Abiola despite the relationship between the two of you, we would not believe it. But you have done it. You touched my heart when you even apologized to our family because of the annulment. You touched my heart. Thank You Your Excellency....."

She further asked  Buhari to challenge those who thought they are the 'landlords' of this nation. ".. whoever they are".

President Buhari on his part apologized to the family on behalf of Nigeria for the annulment of the June 12 election.

He said, “ On behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, I tender an unreserved apologies for the injustice done to democracy on June 12.

"In me and on behalf of fellow Nigerians, we tender apologies to the family of Abiola and all those who lost their life in the struggle"

Recall that President Buhari, when asked by TELL magazine in 1999, why he refused to plead Abiola's case with his personal friend, Late Gen.Sani Abacha, said, "Abiola provided the money that funded Babangida's coup which ousted me from office in 1985. I will never forgive him even in death."
