OREDOLA ADEOLA|
The Lagos State Government and Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing have agreed to shut down the Third Mainland Bridge temporarily for four days starting from midnight of Thursday, August 23 to midnight of Sunday, August 26, 2018, for Investigative Maintenance Test to be carried out.
The maintenance and repair works at the bridge which is also known as Gen Ibrahim Babangida Bridge, is expected to cost N18.874 billion. Recall that this amount was approved on Wednesday, May 2, by the Federal Executive Council, FEC, out of a total of N99 .01 billion budgeted for repair and maintenance of roads and bridges nationwide.
The contract was awarded to Borini Prono an Italian construction firm which constructed the bridge from the onset. The Federal Government had earlier announced plans to shut the bridge in July 27 to July 30, but had to be shifted to August 24 to 26, after due consultation with the Lagos State Government and wide deliberations with other stakeholders.
Mr. Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Power, Works and Housing, disclosed that the renovation work was conceived in 2011 but was not captured in the budget. He said the contract which is expected to be completed within 27 months has now been captured in the 2018 budget with a sub head of “Bridge renovation and repair contracts”
Fashola explained that the project will involve the replacement of 33 piles at the first phase with a total of 177piles to be strengthened in all.
He also said expansion linking the bridge together would be assessed with a view to replacing the obsolete ones.
Speaking about the temporary shutdown, Mr.Ade Akinsanya, state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, disclosed that the decision was taken after due consultation with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.
The four-day closure, according to the Commissioner, will enable the contractors assess the true state of the bridge after which works would commence by the end of the year or early in 2019.
Akinsanya said: “The 3rd Mainland Bridge which was constructed about 30 years ago by the Ibrahim Babangida's military administration, has had haphazard maintenance and repairs in the past which the present Federal Government is committed to correct by carrying out proper and continuous maintenance and repairs on it.”
The State Government appealed for the cooperation, support and understanding of all motorists and residents, advising them to minimize non-essential travel and movements during the four-day closure.
The government said all traffic management agencies including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police, among others, have been mandated to ensure smooth flow of traffic on all the other alternative roads and traffic corridor across the metropolis to ensure free flow of traffic.
