1. Nigeria the poorest nation in the world.
Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, says Nigeria is the home of the highest number of poor people in the world. She's expected in Nigeria this week. The UK PM in South Africa, said Africa is home to a majority of the world’s fragile states, and a quarter of the world’s displaced people.
She added that Africa has the highest number of poor people in the world, stating that 87 million Nigerians were living below the poverty line of $1 and 90 cents per day.
“Much of Nigeria is thriving, with many individuals enjoying the fruits of a resurgent economy, yet 87 million Nigerians live below $1 and 90 cents a day, making it home to more very poor people than any other nation in the world,” she said.
2. This is Bookings Institution Report:
Nigeria has now taken over as the nation with the highest number of extremely poor people, a report by Brookings Institution has shown.
Before now, India used to hold the position with a population of 1.324 billion people as against Nigeria’s 200 million.
According to the report, the number of Nigerians in extreme poverty increases by six people every minute.
“According to our projections, Nigeria has already overtaken India as the country with the largest number of extreme poor in early 2018, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo could soon take over the number 2 spot,” it read.
“At the end of May 2018, our trajectories suggest that Nigeria had about 87 million people in extreme poverty, compared with India’s 73 million. What is more, extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people every minute, while poverty in India continues to fall.
Nigerians you are becoming poorer everyday despite the fact you are receiving your salaries except you are cutting corners. This is the reality, don't deceive yourself that all is well. Compare your lifestyles 3 or 4 years ago, there are many things that we used to take for granted that have now become luxuries.
The reason is not far fetched. There are soaring prices of goods and services but your income is fixed. Your purchasing powers has reduced considerably as a result of recession.
Nigeria an import oriented economy has been bastardized by exchange rate of N360 to a dollar against N122 about 3 or 4 years ago. Children school fees, rents, transportation costs have gone up but no corresponding increase in your disposable income.
Opportunities to grow wealth is shrinking because the government of the day has not initiated favourable policies to grow the economy despite more revenue accruing to government as oil prices hovering between $70 to $80 per barrel.
So friends and families you are part of 87 million Prime Minister and Brooking Institutions are talking about.
Do you want to continue to live in perennial poverty. Do you want to be among the 6 people sliding to poverty level every 1 minute?
