FG plans to limit number of children per mother

The Nigerian Government has developed policy aimed at limiting the number of children that a mother could raise in the country. Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, Minister of Finance made this known while responding to questions during a session at the 24th Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to her the one if the strategies is to engage traditional rulers and other leaders across the country as means of educating the citizens especially women. She added that the move was aimed at addressing one of the “ great challenges” in the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan( ERGP) of the Federal Government.

Recall that the Federal Government in April launched the ERGP, as a policy framework of the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. containing  60 critical initiatives expected to bail the country out of recession and spur growth and prosperity. Some of the initiatives included stabilizing macro-economic, energy infrastructure and driving industrialization.

The Finance Minster further disclosed that the country’ s population had been identified as one of the great challenges confronting the successful implementation of the ERGP.

She said , “ We have been engaging traditional rulers and other leaders. Specifically , we have found out that to be able to address one of the great challenges that we identified in the ERGP, which is the growth in our population, we need to engage these institutions.

“ And we hope that with their support , we will get to a point where we can come out with the policy that limits the number of children that a mother can have because that is important for sustaining our growth.

She further noted that the population control  is key to achieving the country’s sustainable growth as captured in the ERGP.
