The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Oyo State has increased tuition fees of students of the institution from N120,00 for indigenes of Oyo and Osun states to N200,000, while non- Indigenes are expected to pay N250,000 from N150,000 paid during the 2017/2018 academic session.
The students of the institution had initially paid N63,500 for indigenes and N72,500 for non-indigenes before it was first increase to N120,000 and N150,00 for indigenes and non-indigenes respectively.
In a statement released on Monday, October 15, 2018, by Mr. J.A Agboola, Registrar of the institution, the management asked all indigenes of the Owner-States (Oyo and Osun) to pay N200, 000.00 (Two hundred thousand Naira) per session, while non-indigenes are to pay N250, 000.00 (Two hundred thousand Naira) per session.
The statement further revealed that the new regime of tuition fees will take effect from2018/2019 Academic Session, which commences on Monday, October 29,2018.
The students of the institution, have following the release of the statement on Tuesday barricaded the school's gates, while Comrade Abiodun Oluwaseun, Students' Union President, has challenged the management to reverse the decision.
According to him, “The students have shut down main road in front college of health sciences and also the school main entrance. No retreat , no surrender, we won’t back out. We shall resist this decision until the irregularities are withdrawn.
He said, " The Student Union termed the increase as laughable and nothing but a joke by the school management.
"This scorn act by the management, has called for nothing but an immediate and excessive fury from the student populace, as the school management has shown vividly their lack of trust and respect for agreement, following several consultation and consolidation with several assurance of no hike in the tuition fee.
" The school management has called for war, they've dared our strength and unity and we must show them the consequence of oppression. Now is the time we must come together and fight against injustice and proposed exploitation by the management of the institution," Abiodun said.
He however vowed that the show down with the school management over the hike will continue until the needful is done.
