The family of Late Dr.Nnamdi Azikwe have commended President Muhammadu Buhari for commissioning the Zik Mausoleum in honour of country’s first President in Onitsha Anambra State on Thursday 24th Jan 2019.

Professor Uche Azikwe, wife of the Late sage, thanked the President for honouring her late husband. Ambassador Emeka Azikwe, one of the sons of Dr Azikwe, Ambassador described the edifice as a wonderful legacy initiated in recognition of his father’s immense contributions to the nation’s independence, democracy and national development.
“As we celebrate the commissioning of the Zik Mausoleum and conference center, the historic legacies left by him are numerous and vital to the revitalization of the development potentials in Africa” he said.
Recall that the Mausoleum has been awarded and rewarded more than 4 times in over 16years.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Mausoleum, President Buhari said the building has enormous international significance.
He said, “This is meant to honor the Memory of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the great Zik of Africa and Nigeria’s first President and one of her foremost nationalists.
He expressed belief that the building would serve the purpose of promoting nationalism, patriotism and Public service. The president noted that Zik chose to build indelibly in the nation’s heart by his service, comradeship, brotherhood and politics.
The President further said that the mausoleumwas not built for Azikiwe but for Nigerians, to show that Nigeria remains indivisible.
As I reflect on Ziks life and all of what he achieved, I acknowledge that Zik does not need this house, it is we who need Ziks name to give this house a meaning.
I acknowledge that Ziks name is also everywhere in Nigeria including the airport in Abuja because Zik chose not to limit himself to Zungeru, his place of birth.

Earlier in his welcome address, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State had described the event as very important in the history of the nation and in the narrative of the state. He said he had no doubt that the mausoleum would become an important landmark in eastern Nigeria and worthy addition to the numerous tourism offerings in the state.
hile thanking Federal Government for the project, he urged it to declare Zik’s birthday, November 16, a National Day in the Nation.
