The Candidates : Atiku plans establishment of feedlots to solve farmers/herdsmen crisis

Oredola Adeola |

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar , Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next month’s election, has proposed the establishment of feedlots as one of the measures to address farmers/herdsmen’s crisis.

He suggested this while responding to question on “The Candidates” , a political talkshow on Wednesday anchored by Ms Kadaria Ahmed.

Feedlot, it would be recalled, is a confined yard area with watering and feeding facilities, where cattle are fed for the purpose of production. Cattle raised on pastures are 'finished' in feedlots on a highly nutritious diet of grain, prior to slaughter or live export.

According to Atiku, feedlots will be established across the country to meet the yearnings of the herdsmen across the country.
He said, “Farmers/Herdsmen crisis is an old problem, dating back to the days of the prophets. America faced the same problem. Eventually, the solution is the establishment of feeding lots all over the country.

“I belief that the best solution to the farmers/herders clashes is to try and enlighten our herdsmen on the use of feeding lots. These feeding lots can conveniently be established all over the country.

He further explained that feeding lots would be established through establishment of companies to produce animal feeds, adding that every state government through Agric extension service to enlighten the herders to stay in one place and take care their animals instead of moving their animals around.

He said, “We shall give herdsmen the opportunity to settle in places through same way we treated the establishment of nomadic schools, which was set aside by the Buhari’s administration.

When asked about the open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law in some states of the federation, Atiku said the law  would be reviewed and the constitutionality of the grazing law would be spotlighted in order to ensure that it does not  infringe on the right to freedom of movement and residence across the country.
