Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation, Professor Wole Soyinka, Nobel Laureate, Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, and other dignitaries, were the first set of dignitaries to ride on the newly constructed Standard Guage rail line, from Iju in Lagos to Abeokuta on Friday.
The test run on the Lagos -Ibadan standard gauge line was carried out after work on the tracks had recorded some progress with 1. 5 kilometres being laid daily.
The contractor, the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC) is being pressured to deliver the 156- kilometre Lagos-Ibadan fast rail with extension to Nigeria’s premier port in Apapa within two years.
The Editorials gathered that the Federal Government has declared three months free ride for passengers within Lagos to Abeokuta axis, while work progresses on the Abeokuta- Ibadan end of the entire project.
Speaking at the flag-off , Amaechi disclosed that the train was moving at a speed of 60 kilometres per hour, but could potentially go as fast as 150 kilometres an hour.
He said, " I have not seen these kinds of communities before. From Iju to Ibadan I did not encounter any problems at all. There are places you go (for construction), before you dig anything, ‘bring money, bring money.
In his remark,Professor Wole Soyinka disclosed that the site of the megastation used to be his hunting field during his youthful years.
He said, “This plateau seems to be naturally donated for this kind of enterprise, one of these days, from this platform, a rocket will go to the next planet.
“I don’t give a damn who put this there, it doesn’t matter whatsoever, as the Yoruba adage goes, let a man see a snake, let a woman kill the snake, just let the snake be killed,” Soyinka said.
