Cardi B, 26, American rapper, songwriter and singer, who was a rookie in 2015, has emerged as the first solo female artist to win best rap album at the Grammys   since inception in 1996, after being honoured for her debut effort Invasion Of Privacy.

Recall that Lauryn Hill was the last woman to win the award over 20 years ago, as part of hip-hop group  the Fugees, so Cardi's win is especially momentous.

Cardi’s Invasion Of Privacy album, which contains hit singles Bodak Yellow, Be Careful and I Like It, was released in April last year to universal acclaim.

The new mum , who delivered her first daughter , Kulture , in July 2018 said, “I’m not just saying thank you because she’s my daughter. It’s because, you know, when I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete, like three songs that I was for sure having.

“And then you know, you know how it was, we was like, we have to get this album done so I could still do videos while I’m still not showing. And it was very long nights.”

“The nerves are so bad. Maybe I need to start smoking weed,” she said jokingly

"I just want to say thank you everybody that was involved." Cardi proceeded to highlight several particular people, including her daughter and collaborators: "I want to thank my daughter Kulture...I'm not just saying thank you because she's my daughter. It's because, you know, when I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete.

“ I had, like, three songs I was for sure having. And then you know how it was: We was like, We have to get this album done so I could shoot these videos while I'm still not showing. And it was very long nights. I want to thank all the artists in my—I'm sorry, I don't got [time].

“ I want to thank all the artists that took their time and did verses for my album." She listed them, including Migos, which prompted her to give Offset his shoutout. "You, husband, thank you.

"Nah, seriously, 'cause he was like, you're going to do this album, girl. We're gonna have this baby, and we're gonna make this album. And thank you so much, everybody."

The rapper was also nominated for the big prize of the night, album of the year, but lost out to country music star Kacey Musgraves, who won for Golden Hour.

The ex-stripper was previously best known for appearing on reality TV show  Love & Hip Hop: New York.

  • Cardi B, cemented her legacy in hip-hop history by emerging as the first solo female rap artist to top the Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill achieved the elusive feat back in 1998 with "Doo Wop (That Thing)."
