The 15th edition of the West Africa’s biggest tourism expo, Akwaaba, African Travel Market has commenced with the Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda Day & Jollof Rice War. The Travel Market which started on Sunday, September, 22, 2019 at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, will end on Tuesday, September 24, 2019.
AKWAABA Africa Travel Market has been the major international and largest marketing platform to meet with airlines, Travel Agents, Hotels, Tourism boards both foreign and local, the media and general travelling public in West Africa. Akwaaba Travel Market has grown to become the most important travel marketing platform in the region drawing attendance from over 7,000 to 10,000 Visitors from 20 Countries.
It is a 3-day business to business event presenting a diverse range of destinations to Africa and international travel professionals, it is a unique opportunity for African travel trade market to meet, negotiate, network and conduct businesses with top players in Travel and Tourism.
The event started with the 3rd Edition of the West African #jollofrice War . Nigeria again, rules the jollof rice kingdom, as the country's representatives at the Chef's competition cleared the prizes. The West African Chef Challenge featured 20 Chefs selected from four countries including Nigeria, Benin Republic, Ghana and Togo.
During a special session with Mr Kiwanda Godfrey Ssuubi, State Minister for Tourism for Uganda, who spoke extensively about THE LAND OF MARTYRS in UGANDA .He further disclosed that Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine in Namugongo is the largest Christian pilgrimage destination in Africa today ( located in 5 kilometers, East of the Ugandan Capital).
According to him, " UGANDA is the Pearl of Africa, because it is the only country in Africa with stable weather.No other African country has the best tourism potentials like Uganda. Its bio-diversity is second to none.
He further charged Nigerians to visit the country to explore its religious phenomenon, adding that the Uganda Martyrs are a group of 23 Anglicans and 22 Catholic converts who were executed between 31 January 1885 and 27 January, 1887 on the orders of Mwanga II, the Kabaka of historical kingdom of Buganda, now part of Uganda.
He said, " We are celebrating the martyrs and their sacrifices because they and many other people throughout Uganda died by spear and fire for their faith. They changed the dynamics of religious growth in Uganda.
" We invite tourists from Nigeria, especially, to come and explore the Holy Grounds of the Uganda Martyrs Shrine at Namugongo every June 3rd, being the Uganda Martyrs Day Celebration and also enjoy wildlife adventure safari of the country.
His Excellency, Nelson Ochegor, Uganda High Commissioner to Nigeria also corroborated the Minister's statement. He however revealed that Ugandans are hospitable, assuring that Uganda is in a new dawn of tourism experience with its abundance of wildlife and political stability.
Ambassador Ocheger noted that he has travelled to so many part of Nigeria, adding that he would like to make CALABAR his second home.
Monday, September 23, 2019, Day 2 of the West African Travel Market will feature the Dubai and Gambian day as well as the the Caribbean Panel discussion coordinated by the Caribbean Tourism Organization
