Rwandan President Paul Kagame has launched Mara Phones manufacturing plant in Kigali, Rwanda thereby joining South Africa and Egypt in the battle for African tech-revolution.
Recall that South Africa's Onyx was the first African-made smartphone, followed by Egypt's SICO/ Nile X smart phone.
The Rwandan's Maraphone was established to improve citizen's access to digital services, and it is operated by the Mara Group.
Maraphone is expected to be the first high specification, affordable smartphone manufactured in Africa. The phone has a warranty and it can be purchased in installments over two years.
President Kagame said, “Producing smartphones is not a simple matter. Around one thousand individual components are involved. The Mara Phones plant is therefore a complex manufacturing operation, requiring significant technical skills and expertise. It is another milestone on our journey to high-tech, “made-in-Rwanda” industry.
"Our world is changing fast. Keeping pace requires constant innovation. This is the path Rwanda has chosen for our development. The investment by Mara Phones Group is therefore in perfect harmony with our focus on science and technology as the key drivers of our economic transformation.” President Kagame remarks at the official launch of Mara Phones manufacturing plant.
According to the Mara Group, the Maraphone will produce high quality and affordable smartphones to primarily serve the population of Africa and also with the aim to export to other continents such as Europe.
