Peter Obi factor hits BBN Season 7, as official voting result drops by 23%

Oredola Adeola

The 2022 edition of the just concluded Big Brother Naija “Level Up” failed to level up to expectation, this is because the number of voters fell below the votes that the ‘Shine ya Eye’ Season 6, 2021 edition recorded.

John Ugbe, Chief Executive Officer,  MultiChoice Nigeria, disclosed this during the prize presentation to the winner of the “Level Up” edition, Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, on Tuesday in Lagos.

The Editorials' analysis showed that Season 7 received over 1bn votes during the programme compared with a total of 1.3 billion votes garnered in the previous season. This represented a 23.08% decrease in the number of votes cast by fans for their favourite housemates.

The organisers however noted that hosting the show in 2022, cost a whooping N4.7billion compared with about N4.3 billion spent during the Season 6 edition.

The BBNaija season 4 “Pepper Dem” edition held in 2019, recorded 240 million votes, while the Season 5 “Lockdown” edition had a total of 900 million votes.

Recall that Big Brother Naija is a reality show which has a larger number of youths as an audience, but that young and vibrant population decided to stay focused on the commitment of supporting their favourite Presidential candidate, Peter Obi of Labour Party who they are determined to vote for in the 2023 Nigerian General election.

While no reason was given by the organiser for the relatively low engagement,  followers of the leading reality show in Africa, attributed the not too impressive votes to the political atmosphere in Nigeria, where many young people who watch the show diverted their energy and interests to the campaigning for the favourite politician.

Phyna emerged as the winner of the show as she walked away with a N100 million grand prize.

The grand prize comprises N50 million, a new SUV from Innoson Motors, a Dubai trip for two, a year supply of Pepsi, a new techno phone-Camon 19, a supply of Unik soap and a supply of home appliances from Nexus among other mouth-watering items.

Ugbe also said that over one billion votes were cast in the course of the show.
He commended the housemates for giving premium entertainment during the show as he also appreciated the fans and the media for their continued support.

Ugbe said, “N4.7 billion was invested into the show, that is the cost of production of the season 7 show, we also had over one billion votes throughout the show.

“Big Brother Naija show is more than just entertainment, it also reflects social and value creation, the show has empowered over 1,200 people, cutting across fashion designers, carpenters, interior decorators, photographers and more.

“Today, this show contributes significantly to the Nigerian economy,” he said.
Phyna, the winner of the show, was presented with a cheque of N50 million and her new SUV.

Phyna, who was referred to as the “content queen”, attributed her success during the reality show to God as she appreciated her fans, family and organisers of the show.

She said, “I appreciate God and Biggie for the privilege to participate in the show, this is after four years of attempts to be part of the show, I finally made it in the fifth attempt.

“Thanks to my fellow housemates and sponsors of this show, I had an amazing experience, I appreciate everyone who voted for me.

“It feels good to be the winner, I plan to achieve a lot going forward and I pray God helps me, with God, I can conquer all,” she said.
