Reports from local media indicated that the bridge caved in, as the Governor and Kishii Deputy Governor  took selfies. They were with several people who accompanied them to inspect the  road projects in Ogembo town.

The Ogembo post office-Nyakorokoro footbridge was constructed by the Ministry of Public Works as part of the Economic Stimulus Project under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). Further findings show that  it was badly constructed and weak.

Mutua and Maangi were pulled out by divers and some of their aides, who later rushed them to Ogembo Hospital in Kisii County in an ambulance.
Investigation shows that they both survived unhurt and have been treated after the incident.

Two journalists were also taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital with minor injuries.
Speaking with journalist after the incident, the Governor dismissed the report about taking selfies on the bridge.

He said, "I have been baptised by River Gucha and now I must build a house in Gucha,"
“The bridge caved in after a crowd of those who accompanied us joined us," he said.
He claimed that he was safe and that he was having lunch at Maangi's home.
Kisii Communication director Maseme Machuka said the bridge was weak.
He said, “The Governor and DG were unhurt in the incident and they went on to address residents before going for lunch.”
